Exactly 26 years ago today this song became this artist’s 8th number 1 US hit. With a fun dance feel, an awesome music video, that had great choreography as always, and catchy lyrics complimented by a fun back beat, this song is still one of the most talked about single by this artist.
Becoming the third single from Michael Jackson’s album “Bad,” The Way You Make Me Feel, was an instant hit for the artist. The song peaked at number 1 on 3 different US charts, and also on Spanish Singles Charts.
While the song wasn’t the most successful single from the artist’s discography it did see a number 3 spot in the UK, and a number 2 spot in New Zealand.
Now believe it or not, I had never heard this song until after the tragic death of the singer. It was playing during one of those marathons of his videos and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing.
I had spent that summer with my aunt cleaning houses and I was in one of the houses and we had his videos playing on the TV while we cleaned. I remember catching the video and not being able to look away. From the mysterious, yet sexual atmosphere that the setting brought, to the awesome dance break, I was in love.
This song is one of the few songs that capture an audience from the beginning. When the beat first kicks in and that drum can be heard it’s like you are being forced to hear how it plays out.
Now to the vocals. While Michael Jackson may not have been a belter, or possessed a very “power house” voice there is still that unique and fresh quality to it that you can’t help but fall in love with.
From those Michael “hee hee’s” to the smooth high notes and his delivery, Michael, brings something to this song that is needed to make it work. It’s hard to explain, but not everyone can cover this song. Michael has this way of making the song his own and delivering it in a way that is unforgettable.
When this song came out I wasn’t even thought of, but yet it still plays an influential part in shaping who I am as a performer. From the presence, to the voice choices, and of course the music itself. I love it all. So here is your throwback Thursday world. Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”
