It’s been two years since we’ve gotten new music from Carrie Underwood. But Underwood is back with new material and it does not disappoint. From her bad ass, powerhouse duet with Miranda Lambert to her soft and moving tribute to the troops, Underwood has returned to the music game with a bang.
Fast forward to May 21st, 2014 and Underwood has four number one studio albums, 11 number one singles and has headlined at least 5 successful tours.
What’s even harder to believe is that it’s been 2 years since the release of Underwood’s most recent studio album Blown Away. Since its release — on May 1st of 2012 — the album has spun out four top 20 singles and four beautifully crafted music videos.
Yet as a Carrie fan I’m ready for some new music — and not only were my prayers answered — but the results were beyond expectations.
“Keep Us Safe”
As part of ACM’s All-Star Salute to the Troops, Underwood performed her new — promotional — single “Keep Us Safe.” The song is a heart-melting and moving prayer for the troops.
The song resembles a lot of the same elements of Underwood’s earlier cover of “How Great Thou Art.” There are moving lyrics and a passion behind her voice that moves the song along in a very uplifting and inspiring way.
From the moment the first line is sung by Underwood all the way to that amazing, and goosebump inducing, belt towards the end, this song is perfectly delivered.
One of my favorite lines of the song is;
“Even when we get lost through the valleys we cross, God keep us safe…”
but the most moving part of the song is of course the beautifully written and sung chorus;
“God keep us safe, safe tonight. Keep our eyes towards the sky, send an army of angels to make us brave. Keep us strong and unafraid. God keep us safe.”
What I really love about Carrie Underwood is her ability to sing live without a backing track. The single is being released as a live single, which means the recording is a live recording of the song.
It isn’t mixed, or perfected through studio equipment, and it’s still as flawless as any of her studio recordings. It just makes it more raw and personal and makes the song that much better.
The single was released for digital download on Monday, May 19th. You can get your copy of it now on Itunes, but until then take a listen below.
“Somethin’ Bad”-Miranda Lambert ft. Carrie Underwood
Country acts everywhere need to step aside and watch how you are supposed to deliver a country duet.
The two resident country divas have teamed up and showed us that sometimes something bad can be very good.
For Miranda Lambert’s upcoming fifth studio album, Platinum, she teamed up with country powerhouse Carrie Underwood for a song entitled “Somethin’ Bad.”
But don’t let the title fool you, this duet is far from something bad. This song is the love child of Underwood’s number one single “Before He Cheats” and Lambert’s single “Gunpowder and Lead.”
The song is compromised of guitars, hard hitting drums, sass, big vocals and a very ominous tone. It’s fun to listen to and the attitude is right on point with both of the singers.
To me, this duet has been long awaited. These two work perfect together — at least in my opinion. The harmonies are beautiful, it doesn’t sound like a vocal competition between them, and there isn’t any awkwardness because both their voices can keep up with the other, so no one falls flat.
The two premiered the song for the first time during a big performance at the most recent Billboard Awards. The two looked sexy, had the attitude and gave the audience a beautiful performance.
You can currently download the single on ITunes or preorder Lambert’s upcoming album. Until you do that enjoy the song below.
Underwood said that in 2014 she would start prep on her fifth studio album and then possibly another tour. While there hasn’t been any official lead single or word that Underwood has been in the studio, these songs should cover you for now.
But I’m hopeful and patiently waiting the release of another album.
